Marpa, The Translator

Marpa was the first person of the Kagyu lineage to be born in Tibet. He learned many languages and took three very dangerous trips to India to bring back the Buddhist teachings. He lived on a farm with a wife and eight children (including Tipupa). Marpa’s main disciple was Milarepa, and the trials that Milarepa underwent to reach enlightenment is one of the most famous stories in Tibet. Marpa is reported to have had a temper and so he is usually depicted as very angry.
